Diamond D-707 Repair

Ever since I could try out active antennas, I have become a great fan of them. Well, some of them.

For VHF/UHF I used to use a Diamond D-707 omni-directional antenna. It is specified to work from 500kHz to 1500MHz. To be honest - for long, medium and shortwave I have something better, but for VHF/UHF this antenna is excellent when you have little space and want to cover as much as you can with one antenna. The amp is said to have 20dB gain, the gain is adjustable by means of a supply voltage regulator.

But as things go, somewhen the D-707 broke, the amplifier didn't amplify anymore. I assume it was either a close by lightning strike or myself transmitting with too much power in too little distance :(

That was a pity because Diamond has stopped production of this antenna somewhen in the year 200x, for unknown reasons. I did not throw away my antennas (I had two of them), with the idea of repairing them somewhen. Somewhen is now, 2015.

Is this the new dawn?

Das war also nun mein 2. C3. Das Ganze war etwas weniger überraschend, aber genauso begeisternd wie letztes Jahr. Und voll, richtig voll, laut den Berichten sollen über 10'000  Besucher dagewesen sein (letztes Jahr waren es so um die 8'000).

#31c3 Keynote Totalausfall

Der 30C3 2013 war mein erster C3, und ich war beeindruckt. Aber ich war auch niedergeschlagen, die Nachrichten von Snowden et al waren niederschmetternd, die NSA überall, Crypto unbenutzbar, kaum ein Fünkchen Hoffnung.

Darum habe ich mich um so mehr über das diesjährige Motto "A new dawn" des 31C3 gefreut. Der Sonnenaufgang, the rising hope. Schön.

Dieses Motto sollte von der Keynote gesetzt werden und den gesamten Kongress inspirieren und leiten. Diese Idee, das es wieder aufwärts geht, das es Hoffnung gibt und GPG benutzbar.

Was dann aber in der Keynote kam war albern und schlecht. Die Intro von erdgeist und geraldine war prima, die Subtitles awesome (*applause*) aber was Alec Empire da abliefert war eine böse Enttäuschung.

Das man sich und seine Musikcombo mal vorstellt und promoted - geschenkt. Das man die Musiktitel nicht perfekt audiomässig abmischt - kommt vor. Aber dieses hilflose Gestammel aus schlechtem Englisch, unausgegorenen politischen Forderungen und hilfloser Vortragstechnik war übel.

Merke - nicht jeder gute Musiker mit einer politischen Message ist auch ein guter und motivierender Vortragender. Hoffen wir das der Silberstreif am Horizont kein 'dusk' anstatt 'dawn' ist.

Unofficial artwork for 31c3

Last year 30C3 was my first C3 ever. And last year the event wiki had a section called 'artwork' which inspired my to decorate my desktop background a bit.

This year the artwork section is missing for unknown reasons. So i 'lifted' the graphics I could find and put together a very simple and absolutely unofficial backbround for 31C3. The size is 1680x1050, which happens to be the size of my notebook screen. Feel free to use or modify or whatwever.

See you at 31C3.

Here are the graphics I liberated from the wiki and Chaosupdates Twitter account... I hope nobody will be too pissed off about that. If so - let me know.

Marconi Memorial CW Contest 2014

I played only a few hours on and off during this contest. Conditions were ok but not spectacular. Some strong noise and clicks on the band due to nearby high power stations.
